Driving Lessons Grantham The A1

Entry and exit of the A1 on Driving Lessons in Grantham

Driving on and off the A1 when on your driving lessons in Grantham is important as it introduces the faster speeds. This blog has 3 key tips for you to practise.

1. Seperations gaps At the higher speeds of 50 mph + it is important to remember to keep 2 seconds away from the vehicle in front (look here how that changes when raining). Likewise, the nearest vehicle behind should also be 2 seconds away, if any closer, say 1 second, then increase your gap from the vehicle in front to 3 seconds. This is accommodating poor driving from behind and is a #gooddrivinghabit.

2. Keep up with traffic It is a little known fact that you can fail a driving test in Grantham for driving too slowly on the A1 dual carriageway. Coming on to the A1 and not keeping up with traffic already on it means that those vehicles behind then have to overtake you. This is especially hazardous for large vehicles to do. In the majority of driving conditions it is quite unnecessary to be driving at anything less than 55mph, and it is also inconsiderate to other road users. Look at the potential hazards here to help assess the correct speed.

3. Spot entry/exit slip roads The sooner you spot them, the sooner you can plan for them. This is a big subject and getting this wrong at higher speeds can be dangerous. Pay attention to the length of the slip road, the shorter it is, the less time you have to be either decelerating (exit) or accelerating (entry). Check out this exit slip road here for “Barrowby” of an example of a rather short slip road with a pretty sharp left bend at the end of it. Appreciating that fact early on will help prevent you exiting the dual carriageway at too high a speed.

We start driving on the A1 dual carriageway in Grantham on Day 4 of the Intensive Driving Course in Grantham – you will get plenty of practise applying the above 3 tips. Hope it helps!

Correct Speed On Driving Lessons In Peterborough

How To Know The Correct Speed on Driving Lessons in Peterborough

On my driving lessons in Peterborough, the issue of driving at the correct speed often crops up.  Sometimes we can feel pressured from drivers behind tailgating, sometimes we can miss a speed sign, sometimes we can unconsciously copy the speed of a vehicle in front of us, only to realise they are actually driving above the speed limit.  There’s many little ‘traps’ and by far the best thing to do is identify a technique that you will adopt in your normal driving that means you will be able to identify the appropriate speed completely independently, no matter what the conditions, or how you are feeling, or what is happening inside/outside the car.

One such technique is shown in this video.

Driving in a road, not knowing what the speed limit is, AND not having the skill to assess what it should be, is a lonely old place to be, especially on your driving test.  Not a nice feeling.

But beyond the driving test, finding yourself on a road, with drivers behind, but you don’t know how fast you can legally go, and more importantly you don’t know what clues to look out for to give you an educated guess, is kind of awkward.  This is at least the stuff of ‘points on licence’ and at worse, it could be ‘accident’ material.

Here is a classic example in Peterborough.

This goes beyond simply “staying alert” in a 30 zone (as important as that undoubtedly is), this is about being able to assess driving conditions to enable you to make a judgement on the appropriate speed IN THE ABSENCE of seeing a speed sign.

Developing this skill on driving lessons is one thing, but driving 30 in a 60 on a driving test, or even worse, attempting to drive 40 in a 30 on a driving test, it will be “curtains”.   Remember, anything that crops up on test that breaks the law, is an instant fail.

Check out this video for more on “What speed should I drive at?”

Wishing you well on your driving lessons

Turning Right At Crossroads | Peterborough

Turning right at Crossroads

There are a fair few large crossroads like this in Peterborough that are controlled by traffic lights.

The key thing to remember is that when the traffic light goes green and you are turning right, you are “crossing” the oncoming traffic, as such, you have to be prepared to wait as oncoming traffic has priority over you – “I’m turning right, I have no rights” is a phrase to remember.

However, look to see if there is a right green filter arrow, as these are our friend, these make our life easier.  If there is a green filter arrow, and it is illuminated, then STILL check that the oncoming traffic is held on a red light (remember you must never assume anything), before you turn into the new road.  Before you turn into the new road, you must look into the new road, to make sure that it is not blocked at all.

But here is a key tip for you.  When the main traffic light goes green, if you do not proceed forward so that your wheels roll over the pressure sensor in the road, the traffic lights don’t even know you are waiting to turn right and so will not turn on the right filter arrow!  So do look out for the thin black pressure sensors near the middle of the junction.

Take a look at this video to see this in action.  See if you can spot the green filter arrow, and then see if you can see the pressure sensor near the middle of the junction.

It’s really good to practise turning right at crossroads loads; ones with traffic lights, and without.  Really get to grips with this subject, so that you feel confident in being able to predict what is going to happen.

Driving Lessons In Spalding

Driving Lessons in Spalding “observations at junctions”

There are plenty of examples when on a driving lesson in Spalding of being on a junction with limited vision of the traffic on the major road.

It is crucial when on driving lessons in Spalding and particularly on junctions with limited visibility (known as “closed junctions”), to ensure that you give yourself enough time to take adequate observations at the junction before emerging.

Here is a very short video of the minimum observations to be taken at junctions.

Driving Lesson Grantham Flash For Cash

What Is A ‘Flash for Cash’?

On a recent driving lesson in Grantham I witnessed an attempted ‘Flash for cash’ when my pupil approached this  junction, and was waiting for a gap in the traffic on the A607.  This is a notoriously busy junction, and often the emerge is as a result of being “invited” out by traffic already on the A607.

My pupil was waiting to turn right as shown on the link, when a battered old blue van approaching from our left (on the A607) slowed right down and flashed us with headlights. However, this apparent “invite” had a sting in the tail, and appears to have been a “Flash for Cash”. As my pupil began to emerge, the blue van promptly cut across us, and we narrowly avoided a collision.

This is a recent tactic being adopted in order to claim compensation by subsequently denying any use of headlights and any “invitation”.

More on this here.
